This is excerpted from the article "Bottom Line Built on Princples" in yesterday's Financial Post.
Janet Cockburn was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1995. A
big part of getting on with life after a mastectomy meant resuming her active
lifestyle.
In the process of doing so, she and fellow cancer survivors
all encountered a similar problem. They could not find a sports bra that fit.
So in 2004, after some prodding from friends and family, she
founded Janac Sportswear and set out to make one. Ms. Cockburn, who hails from Burlington,
Ont., built a prototype based on her friends' experiences and advice. However,
the first test run could best be described as a flop.Laying on a medicine ball, she discovered an unfortunate
flaw. "My regular gel prosthesis still stood up... whereas of course my
natural breast went flat," recalls Ms. Cockburn. "I fell off the ball
laughing because it looked so funny."She went back to the drawing board and returned with what is
now her best seller, the Been-a-Boob, a prosthesis that fits inside the bra,
providing balance and support.Ms. Cockburn says she is motivated by a desire to make women
feel confident about their bodies again after breast cancer surgery. She is a
bookkeeper by trade, but it is obvious that for her Janac Sportswear is about
more than the bottom line. She built the business slowly with her own money, securing a
manufacturer in Hamilton, and
approaching her first store in Burlington.
She now sells her products in more than 50 retail outlets across the country
and two in England.
